*What You Need to Know About SUN GLASSES – Choose Sunglasses that Look Great and Protect Your Eyes

*What You Need to Know About Sunglasses
*Choose Sunglasses that Look Great and Protect Your Eyes
By Carly Wickell, About.com Guide
-
There’s such a huge selection of sunglasses styles, prices and features that sometimes it’s hard to decide which pair is the best. Finding a pair of sunglasses you love is easier if you start thinking about your possible choices now, before you go shopping.
-
*What should you look for in a pair of sunglasses?
*Three big things:
good eye protection, comfort and a fantastic style.
-
Put UV protection on your must-have list
Your sunglasses must provide protection from ultraviolet radiation, a component of sunlight that contributes to eye disease. The FDA, the government agency that oversees sun glass manufacture and sales in the U.S., recommends you look for sunglasses with lenses that block 99-100% of UVA and UVB radiation. The label should read either UV 400 or 100% UV protection.
-
*About sunglasses lens materials
Sunglasses lens materials differ quite a bit. Some area heavier than others and some types are more durable.
-
*Three materials are commonly used for sunglass lenses:
-
* Polycarbonate, a durable lightweight plastic.
* CR-39, a plastic used mostly in prescription-grade lenses.
* Glass, durable but much heavier to wear.
-
*Sun glass lens tints and other coatings
UV filtering is one coating that’s applied to sung lass lenses, but there are many others:
-
*Sun glass Lens Tints
Colors are applied to sun glass lenses to help absorb light as it passes through them. The color you choose is a matter of personal taste, but there are a few important color-related benefits to consider.
-
* Gray lens tints reduce brightness, but do not distort color.
* Brown and amber tints reduce glare, including the glare created by the blue frequency in sunlight, which can make things appear hazy. Brown and amber tints distort colors more than gray tints do.
* Yellow lens tints reduce the haze from blue light better than browns, so they really sharpen up the view, but they cause more color distortion.
* Green tinted lenses reduce glare and help filter out some of the blue light. They provide good contrast between objects.
* Rose colored lenses might be a good choice if you participate in water sports or other outdoor activities, because they provide good contrast for objects viewed against blue or green backgrounds.
-
*Should you buy sunglasses with polarized lenses?
Polarizing films applied to lenses help reduce the glare created when light bounces off of some objects, such as water, highways and other similar surfaces. I prefer polarized lenses, but it’s a personal choice.
-
*Watch for sunglasses with lens scratch resistance
A thin coating can be applied to lenses to make them more resistant to scratches. Plastic lenses scratch more easily than glass lenses.
-
*Sunglasses with mirrored lenses
You’ve seen sunglasses with a mirror finish on the outside of the lenses. They’re popular, but mirrored lenses scratch easily because the mirror finish is applied last.
-
*Sunglasses with photochromatic lenses
Photochromatic (or photochromic) lenses become darker when exposed to UV radiation. The shift happens quickly as your surroundings change from bright to dim.
-
*Buying sunglasses with anti-reflective coatings
Anti-reflective coatings reduce the reflection caused by light that hits the back side of lenses, keeping it from bouncing into your eyes.
-
*Sunglass frame components
Sunglass frames are made from plastic, base metals, titanium, aluminum and many other materials. Try on lots of frame types to compare their weight and to find out which ones feel the best.
-
*Children need sunglasses, too
Children need protection from UV radiation and glare, so take care when buying sunglasses for them. Forget about those flimsy little play sunglasses–get them something that will protect their eyes.
-
*Sunglasses with extra eye protection
* Sunglass lenses that wrap around to your temples keep out more light and UV radiation than typical lenses.
* Toss on a wide brimmed hat for more protection from the sun. It’ll help keep your skin healthy and younger looking.
-
Experts tell us that less squinting equals fewer wrinkles. Protect those eyes now!
-
*Choose sunglasses that suit your style
Sun glass styles change every year, just like every other fashion, but the selections are so varied that no pair will ever really go “out” of style. And since sunglasses don’t have to be expensive to be effective, you don’t have to spend a fortune to develop a nice collection.
-
Designer and specialty sunglasses, like the kinds used for sports, cost more than most sunglasses, but you’ll find all kinds of fashion glasses for sale at affordable prices. Watch the UV ratings carefully and you’ll be fine.
-
Unless you already know which frame shapes look good on you, go shopping and try on as many styles as possible. If you can get permission to walk outside with glasses on, do it, so that you can find out how they actually work in the sunlight.(about.com)

Vintage Bakelite Jewelry
-
*HOW TO IDENTIFY BAKELITE JEWELRY
By Carly Wickell
-
*What is Bakelite?
-
Bakelite is a castable, fire resistant plastic that was invented by Leo Baekeland in 1909.
It was originally used for industrial purposes, until jewelry makers found that its light weight made Bakelite a perfect choice for designing and manufacturing inexpensive bracelets, rings, pins and other jewelry.
Bakelite jewelry became especially popular in the 1930′s and 1940′s, after a wider assortment of colors was introduced.
The new batch of Bakelite colors captured the imagination of more and more jewelry companies.
Coco Chanel was one famous designer who offered Bakelite jewelry and accessories.
-
*Do Other Materials Look Like Bakelite?
-
Bakelite is the trade name for the plastic product produced by the Bakelite Corporation, but materials made using the same formula were eventually sold under other trade names in the US and around the world.
Celluloid and lucite are two other plastics used to make jewelry. They can resemble Bakelite, but Bakelite items of the same size are heavier.
-
*How Can I Tell if My Jewelry is Genuine Bakelite?
-
-
Method #1:
Some Bakelite collectors recommend the 409 Test. Here’s how to do it:
-
1. Dip a cotton swab in 409 household cleaner and touch a small area of the piece, such as a back that won’t be visible when worn.
2. If the piece is vintage Bakelite, the accumulated patina will show up as a yellow stain on the cotton swab.
3. Rinse the cleaner off the tested spot right away.
-
Method #2:
Some collectors recommend you place the jewelry in hot water, then remove and sniff. Warmed Bakelite smells like camphor.
-
*Are There Bakelite Imitations?
-
Yes, there are newly manufactured imitations out there, so beware. Linda Grossman, of Evelynne’s Oldies But Goodies, deals in vintage Bakelite and other collectible jewelry.
-
*Here’s what she has to say about the fakes:
-
“We are dismayed that there is a cottage industry that has been created with the production of Fakelite, which has the appearance of Bakelite.
On close examination, and to the trained eye, these items are not vintage Bakelite, but sometimes they have been treated in ways to make them pass the commonly used Bakelite tests (409 and hot water). We recommend that you purchase Bakelite only from a reputable, experienced dealer.”
-
*Sometimes Bakelite is New and Old
-
Some jewelry makers are creating new Bakelite jewelry out of larger pieces of vintage Bakelite, such as radios, which were very popular during Bakelite’s heyday.
Some of the pieces are quite attractive, and most of these craftspeople are honest about the jewelry’s origins.
If you pass the jewelry on to someone else, please be sure they know it is a newly handcrafted item made from vintage Bakelite.

*Traditional Wedding ANNIVERSARY GIFT IDEAS
By Carly Wickell.
-
Traditional wedding anniversary gifts are chosen from a list of materials that are designated for each year.
The first wedding anniversary is symbolized with paper, and from there traditional anniversary gifts become more precious or scarce to reflect the growing number of years a couple has remained together.
-
*Wedding Anniversary Customs
-
No one is certain just when the traditional gift list came into existence, but it probably evolved over time.
Calling years twenty-five and fifty ‘Silver’ and ‘Gold’ may have originated in medieval Europe, where wives were given a silver wreath to celebrate their twenty-fifth year of marriage and a gold wreath for their fiftieth wedding anniversary.
-
*Diamond Wedding Anniversaries
-
Diamonds are traditional anniversary gifts in both the sixtieth and seventh-fifth years. Year sixty probably became a part of existing traditions when Queen Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee after sixty years on the British throne.
The traditional list may seem somewhat boring for the early years, but it doesn’t have to be if you get creative. There are many ways you can turn each year’s anniversary theme into a special gift.
-
*Anniversary Gifts for the First Years, Paper and Cotton
-
• A lovely origami booklet or box folded in a shape that’s special to the recipient. And, hint–hint, you can tuck a second gift into the paper.
• Paper tickets to a movie, the theatre, a concert or another performance.
• A first edition of a favorite book.
• Paper flowers that will never fade.
• Vintage or new cotton clothing or decorative items.
• A scrapbook with a plush cotton cover, filled with memories.
• A cotton wall hanging or quilt, or a painting on cotton.
That’s the idea. There are plenty of personal and decorative gifts for each year and I’m positive you can come up with something special.
-
*Anniversary Gifts with a Twist
-
You can celebrate the yearly tradition even if you want to break away from it — make that year’s theme material a carrier for your gift instead of the actual gift.
• Tuck a ring in a leather wallet.
• Tie a bracelet to a bouquet of roses.
• Hide a necklace inside the pocket of a silk robe.
• Fold a cozy woolen shawl around another gift.
-
*When a Traditional Anniversary Gift Won’t Work
• Ivory is traditional for the fourteenth anniversary, but most new ivory cannot be imported to the US. You can find items made from vintage ivory, but if you’re among those who do not want to own the material at all you might want to consier ivory alternatives, made from nuts and seeds of palm trees and other vegetation.
• Coral isn’t as protected as ivory, but it is another item that many people do not think should be removed from nature. Choose an alternative for your thirty-fifth anniversary, or take a diving trip to see the real thing!
