Vintage Bakelite Jewelry

*HOW TO IDENTIFY BAKELITE JEWELRY

By Carly Wickell

*What is Bakelite?

Bakelite is a castable, fire resistant plastic that was invented by Leo Baekeland in 1909.

It was originally used for industrial purposes, until jewelry makers found that its light weight made Bakelite a perfect choice for designing and manufacturing inexpensive bracelets, rings, pins and other jewelry.

Bakelite jewelry became especially popular in the 1930’s and 1940’s, after a wider assortment of colors was introduced.

The new batch of Bakelite colors captured the imagination of more and more jewelry companies.

Coco Chanel was one famous designer who offered Bakelite jewelry and accessories.

*Do Other Materials Look Like Bakelite?

Bakelite is the trade name for the plastic product produced by the Bakelite Corporation, but materials made using the same formula were eventually sold under other trade names in the US and around the world.

Celluloid and lucite are two other plastics used to make jewelry. They can resemble Bakelite, but Bakelite items of the same size are heavier.

*How Can I Tell if My Jewelry is Genuine Bakelite?

Method #1:
Some Bakelite collectors recommend the 409 Test. Here’s how to do it:

1. Dip a cotton swab in 409 household cleaner and touch a small area of the piece, such as a back that won’t be visible when worn.

2. If the piece is vintage Bakelite, the accumulated patina will show up as a yellow stain on the cotton swab.

3. Rinse the cleaner off the tested spot right away.

Method #2:
Some collectors recommend you place the jewelry in hot water, then remove and sniff. Warmed Bakelite smells like camphor.

*Are There Bakelite Imitations?

Yes, there are newly manufactured imitations out there, so beware. Linda Grossman, of Evelynne’s Oldies But Goodies, deals in vintage Bakelite and other collectible jewelry.

*Here’s what she has to say about the fakes:

“We are dismayed that there is a cottage industry that has been created with the production of Fakelite, which has the appearance of Bakelite.

On close examination, and to the trained eye, these items are not vintage Bakelite, but sometimes they have been treated in ways to make them pass the commonly used Bakelite tests (409 and hot water). We recommend that you purchase Bakelite only from a reputable, experienced dealer.”

*Sometimes Bakelite is New and Old

Some jewelry makers are creating new Bakelite jewelry out of larger pieces of vintage Bakelite, such as radios, which were very popular during Bakelite’s heyday.

Some of the pieces are quite attractive, and most of these craftspeople are honest about the jewelry’s origins.

If you pass the jewelry on to someone else, please be sure they know it is a newly handcrafted item made from vintage Bakelite.

—*Traditional Wedding ANNIVERSARY GIFT IDEAS

*Traditional Wedding ANNIVERSARY GIFT IDEAS

By Carly Wickell.

Traditional wedding anniversary gifts are chosen from a list of materials that are designated for each year.

The first wedding anniversary is symbolized with paper, and from there traditional anniversary gifts become more precious or scarce to reflect the growing number of years a couple has remained together.

*Wedding Anniversary Customs

No one is certain just when the traditional gift list came into existence, but it probably evolved over time.

Calling years twenty-five and fifty ‘Silver’ and ‘Gold’ may have originated in medieval Europe, where wives were given a silver wreath to celebrate their twenty-fifth year of marriage and a gold wreath for their fiftieth wedding anniversary.

*Diamond Wedding Anniversaries

Diamonds are traditional anniversary gifts in both the sixtieth and seventh-fifth years. Year sixty probably became a part of existing traditions when Queen Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee after sixty years on the British throne.

The traditional list may seem somewhat boring for the early years, but it doesn’t have to be if you get creative. There are many ways you can turn each year’s anniversary theme into a special gift.

*Anniversary Gifts for the First Years, Paper and Cotton

• A lovely origami booklet or box folded in a shape that’s special to the recipient. And, hint–hint, you can tuck a second gift into the paper.

• Paper tickets to a movie, the theatre, a concert or another performance.

• A first edition of a favorite book.

• Paper flowers that will never fade.

• Vintage or new cotton clothing or decorative items.

• A scrapbook with a plush cotton cover, filled with memories.

• A cotton wall hanging or quilt, or a painting on cotton.
That’s the idea. There are plenty of personal and decorative gifts for each year and I’m positive you can come up with something special.

*Anniversary Gifts with a Twist

You can celebrate the yearly tradition even if you want to break away from it — make that year’s theme material a carrier for your gift instead of the actual gift.

• Tuck a ring in a leather wallet.

• Tie a bracelet to a bouquet of roses.

• Hide a necklace inside the pocket of a silk robe.

• Fold a cozy woolen shawl around another gift.

*When a Traditional Anniversary Gift Won’t Work

• Ivory is traditional for the fourteenth anniversary, but most new ivory cannot be imported to the US. You can find items made from vintage ivory, but if you’re among those who do not want to own the material at all you might want to consier ivory alternatives, made from nuts and seeds of palm trees and other vegetation.

• Coral isn’t as protected as ivory, but it is another item that many people do not think should be removed from nature. Choose an alternative for your thirty-fifth anniversary, or take a diving trip to see the real thing!

WEDDING GUEST ATTIRE

*WHAT TO WEAR TO A WEDDING

By Cynthia Nellis.
*

*Wedding Guest Style for HER

• Informal Daytime: Short dress or suit (business attire OK for morning weddings)

• Informal Evening: Cocktail dress

• Semi-Formal Daytime: Short dress or suit

• Semi-formal Evening: Cocktail dress

• Formal Daytime: Short dress or suit. Hats and gloves optional.

• Formal Evening or Black-Tie: Long or dressy short cocktail (beading, glam accessories, wrap)

• Ultra-formal or White Tie: Long gown, extra glitz (furs, diamonds, etc.)

*Do’s and Don’ts for HER

• Don’t wear white because it competes with the bride. There are plenty of other colors available.

• Don’t wear black or sequins during the daytime.

• Don’t worry about wearing the same colors as the bridesmaids or mothers. You can’t possibly coordinate with everyone in the wedding party.

• Do wear something feminine and appropriate, out of respect for your hosts. Clubwear, overtly sexy clothing (strapless, see-through, etc) doesn’t belong at a wedding. If you have to ask if it’s appropriate, it probably isn’t.

• Don’t wear opera-length gloves (to top of arm) with anything but sleeveless or strapless gowns.

• Do take off gloves to eat or drink.

• Do use good judgment if the invitation doesn’t specify the formality of the event. A pastel suit or soft floral dress for daytime or a little black dress for evening (after 6 p.m.) will take you almost anywhere.

*Wedding Style for HIM

• Informal Daytime: Dress shirt and pants, preferably a sports jacket.

• Informal Evening: Suit

• Semi-Formal Daytime: Suit

• Semi-Formal Evening: Dark suit

• Formal Daytime: Dark suit and tie

• Formal Evening: Tuxedo (if invitation states “black tie”) or dark suits if women wear short dresses.

• Ultra-formal Evening or White Tie: White tie, vest and shirt.

*Do’s and Don’ts for HIM

• Don’t try to get cute with a tuxedo. A black tux with white shirt and black bow tie is the best way to go. If “Creative Black Tie” or “Texas Formal” or some sort of other vague formal description is used, then going with a tux and black shirt, no tie, might be acceptable. Also, trendier cities like Los Angeles and New York might be more accepting of breaking with tradition.

• Do wear a dark suit, with a tie if the wedding is after 6 PM, and doesn’t say “Black Tie.”

• Don’t wear a tuxedo during the day time, regardless of the formality of the event.

• Do use good judgment if the invitation doesn’t specify the formality of the event. A dark suit and conservative tie will take you just about anywhere.(about.com)

*What To Wear With WHITE

*WHAT TO WEAR…WITH WHITE

By : Cynthia Nellis
*
If head-to-toe white is too nurse-y for you, try these go-with to show off your pristine pieces:

*Stripes

What better way to show off this season’s stripes than with clean, white trousers as a foil?

*Skin

Show a bit of skin with white to offset the goody-two-shoes color. Here, the soft white blouse off the shoulder looks sweetly sexy.

*Black and White Print

Graphic black and white prints look extra-sharp this season. Pick a B&W print for the bottom and add a solid white top.

*Denim

Whether it’s a white peasant top with jeans or a sheer white tube, denim is the perfect partner for something white. Softer washes (faded, blasted, whiskered, etc.) look better than dark rinses.(about.com)
